nEVEn: OPTIMIZE

What is Texture Optimization in nEVEn?

nEVEn provides native, in-model texture optimization that compresses oversized textures and slashes VRAM consumption directly inside SketchUp without breaking material mapping.

In high-detail architectural drafting, downloaded 3D components - such as decorative furniture, photorealistic vegetation, fixtures, and interior decor from 3D Warehouse - frequently bundle uncompressed 4K (4,096 px), 8K (8,192 px), or even 13K+ (13,000+ px) textures. These massive image files exhaust graphics memory (VRAM), slow viewport panning and orbiting, balloon project file sizes, and trigger sudden BugSplat crashes during rendering.

Historically, optimizing textures required exporting individual image files to external editing software (like Photoshop or batch image converters), resizing them manually, re-importing them into SketchUp, and painstakingly realigning their scale and positioning.

nEVEn eliminates this entire ordeal. Using native, in-memory image processing, nEVEn analyzes, downscales, and rebinds textures directly within the .skp database in seconds - preserving exact real-world dimensions, UV mapping, color tints, and alpha transparency.

1. Access & The Launch Sequence

The Texture Optimization panel is accessed by clicking the OPTIMIZE button on the primary Results Dashboard:

The Launch & Preparation Workflow:

  1. Project Verification: Upon clicking OPTIMIZE, nEVEn checks that the active SketchUp project is saved to disk so all safety backup routines can execute reliably.
  2. The Preparation Sequence (Loading Spinner): A modal loading spinner appears while nEVEn prepares the dedicated optimization panel environment. The diagnostic scan data is already collected, but nEVEn uses this moment to generate memory-safe card previews, calculate real-time compression ratios, and organize all eligible materials into their respective review queues.
  3. Instant Zero-Lag Readiness: The optimization panel opens with all assets pre-sorted, categorized, and ready for immediate action - eliminating in-dialog loading pauses or UI freezes.

Key Trigger Thresholds:

  • Saved Project Requirement: The active SketchUp project must be saved on disk to enable full safety features and automated backup creation in the project's local nEVEn/ folder.
  • Intelligent Button Visibility: The OPTIMIZE button only appears on the Results Dashboard when your model contains actionable heavy textures:
  • At least one texture has a file size ≥ 5.0 MB, OR
  • At least one texture has a maximum pixel dimension ≥ 2K (2,048 px).
  • Clean State Silence: If all materials in your model already operate within lightweight, optimized boundaries, the OPTIMIZE button remains hidden - keeping the dashboard interface clean and distraction-free.

2. The 3 Review Queues (Categorization Engine)

To prevent architects from sifting through hundreds of tiny utility textures, nEVEn automatically categorizes all eligible textures into three dedicated review queues accessible via the top-left dropdown:

A. PRIORITY (Primary Review Queue)

  • What it contains: The heaviest textures placing immediate strain on your system.
  • Qualification Criteria:
  • File size on disk ≥ 5.0 MB, OR
  • Total pixel area ≥ 4K (4,096 x 4,096 px / 16+ Megapixels), OR
  • Decompressed GPU VRAM footprint ≥ 256 MB.
  • Workflow Focus: These are the primary targets for optimization. Resolving Priority textures yields the most significant performance gains in both viewport navigation and real-time or external rendering engines.

B. SECONDARY (Standard Review Queue)

  • What it contains: Moderately large textures that are stable but can be optimized to recover headroom.
  • Qualification Criteria: Textures with pixel dimensions between 2K (2,048 px) and 4K (4,096 px) that do not exceed severe memory thresholds.
  • Workflow Focus: Ideal for secondary passes when prepping large models for final client presentations or export.

C. OBSERVED (Reference Review Queue / Structural Clutter)

  • What it contains: Low-resolution textures under 2K (< 2,048 px), repeating background patterns, or utility textures that contribute little to overall memory pressure.
  • Workflow Focus: Used for quick auditing, batch material replacement, or housecleaning.

3. Header Controls & Batch Actions

The top toolbar of the optimization panel provides essential review and batch tools:

  • Review Queue Selector: Dropdown menu allowing instant switching between PRIORITY, SECONDARY, and OBSERVED queues with active item counts.
  • Sync Icon (↻): Clicking the sync button connects directly with SketchUp's active viewport and Materials tray. When you select or sample a material in your model, clicking Sync (↻) instantly locates, scrolls to, and highlights that exact material's card in the grid.
  • Batch Delete: Enables one-click deletion of unwanted materials across the active queue. For safety, the BATCH DELETE button remains locked until at least 2 or more cards are checked.
  • Master Category Toggle (Pill Switch): Located on the far right of the header, this toggle selects or deselects all cards in the active review queue with a single click.

4. Interactive Card Anatomy (5-Card Grid)

nEVEn organizes textures in an ultra-dense, responsive 5-card-per-row grid layout, allowing architects to review multiple assets simultaneously:

Visual & Interactive Controls on Every Card:

  1. Delete Material (Trash Icon, Top-Left): Permanently removes the material from the SketchUp database. Affected geometry safely falls back to SketchUp's default material without deleting the underlying 3D faces.
  2. Replace Texture (Folder Icon, Below Trash): Opens a native system file dialog to replace the texture with a custom image file from disk in-place.
  3. Card Toggle (Pill Switch, Top-Right): Allows individual inclusion or exclusion of the texture from the active optimization batch.
  4. Image Preview: Displays a thumbnail of the texture. Clicking the preview opens the full-resolution image in your system's default external image viewer.
  5. The PREVIEW REJECTED Memory Guard:
  • When an imported texture exceeds 34 MB on disk, nEVEn intentionally suppresses thumbnail generation in the dialog and displays a striped placeholder labeled PREVIEW REJECTED.
  • Why this matters: Decompressing a 160 MB image into Chromium/WebDialog memory can instantly crash SketchUp before optimization begins. This fail-safe guarantees model stability.
  1. [Select] Button: Instantly activates and selects the material inside SketchUp's native Materials tray.
  2. Material Identity: Displays the assigned SketchUp Material Name and the original source image filename (middle-truncated for clean legibility).
  3. Live Metric Comparison (DISK SIZE vs IMAGE SIZE):
  • DISK SIZE: Displays the source file weight (e.g., 164.63 MB) alongside the estimated compressed weight (Est. 4.84 MB).
  • IMAGE SIZE: Displays exact source pixel dimensions (e.g., 13583 x 20670 px) alongside the estimated post-optimization resolution (Est. 4754 x 7234 px).
  1. Severity Badges:
  • CRITICAL (Pink/Magenta Border & Badge): Maximum dimension > 8,192 px (8K+ monsters).
  • CAUTION (Amber/Gold Border & Badge): Total pixel area > 4,096 x 4,096 px (4K+).
  • MODERATE (Blue Accent): Dimension ≥ 2,048 px (2K+).

5. The Precision Optimization Slider

Located below the card grid is the global level controller:

  • Level Indicator: Displays active percentage (e.g., 35%) alongside the total number of selected materials (e.g., Selected : 4).
  • Range & Calibration: Operates on an intuitive continuum from Performance (5%, maximum compression and viewport speed) to Quality (95%, maximum visual fidelity and near-lossless output) in increments of 10%. The default setting is calibrated at 35%.
  • Real-Time Dynamic Recalculation: As you move the slider, nEVEn instantaneously recalculates and updates the Est. Disk Size and Est. Image Size across every selected card in real time.
  • Architect Guidance: Always observe the IMAGE SIZE (Est.) on the card. This represents the exact pixel resolution that nEVEn will generate upon execution.

6. Safety Nets & In-Place Execution

Clicking OPTIMIZE triggers a protective safety verification before any files are modified.

A. The "Create Backup First?" Dialog

nEVEn prompts users with an essential safety choice:

  1. CREATE BACKUP & PROCEED (Recommended): Creates an exact copy of the active SketchUp file in your project's local nEVEn/ folder ([ModelName]_optimize_backup_[timestamp].skp) before touching a single texture.
  2. OPTIMIZE DIRECTLY: Executes optimization immediately in-place without generating a secondary project backup file.
  3. CANCEL: Aborts the action and returns to the grid.

B. Execution Architecture & Material Integrity

During optimization, nEVEn processes candidates sequentially with visual progress tracking:

  • Zero Viewport Freezing: Memory garbage collection runs every 8 textures to keep SketchUp responsive.
  • 180-Texture Safety Cap: Optimization batches are capped at a maximum of 180 textures per run to protect system stability during massive scene cleanups.
  • Preserving UV & Real-World Dimensions: nEVEn extracts the exact physical mapping width and height (in inches or millimeters) before downscaling, then rebinds the optimized image with identical real-world dimensions. Your architectural textures will never shift, stretch, or alter tile frequency.
  • Format & Alpha Intelligence: Textures with transparency (32-bit PNGs) preserve their alpha channels and remain in PNG format. Opaque textures are normalized cleanly to JPG format for maximum disk and VRAM efficiency.
  • Automatic Cache Purge: Unused temporary files and cached materials are purged immediately after the operation commits.

7. Audit, Deltas & Optimization History

Once optimization completes, nEVEn provides full accountability for every byte saved:

  1. In-Card Reduction Deltas: Processed cards update immediately in the grid, showing exact before-and-after reductions and confirmation badges.
  2. The View History Link: Positioned in the bottom-left corner of the dialog footer is a persistent View History link.
  3. The Optimize History Overlay: Clicking View History displays a clean audit log detailing:
  • Total disk memory reclaimed across all materials.
  • Specific before-and-after resolutions for every material processed.
  • Session timestamps and file paths for verified backups.

8. Closing the Loop: Dynamic Status Invalidation

After completing texture optimization and closing the panel, nEVEn automatically protects the integrity of your diagnostics.

The Main Scanner Dashboard does not display stale, outdated numbers. Instead, the Center Advisory Card dynamically updates its live text:

Notice: Texture optimization has finished, but active scan results are now outdated.
ACTION: Please run a fresh rescan with purge and save to update the active model report.

By immediately clicking RESCAN, nEVEn performs a rapid verification pass, confirms total memory relief, updates the VRAM and Load gauges, and establishes a clean, high-performance model baseline.

9. Best Practice Optimization Recommendations

  • Import Triage: When importing heavy entourage from 3D Warehouse, run a quick scan. If the OPTIMIZE button appears, open it immediately and compress Priority textures before duplicating the component across your scene.
  • Render Engine Alignment: In real-time renderers and external visualization software, 8K (8,192 px) textures are virtually indistinguishable from clean 2K (2,048 px) textures in the viewport but consume 16 times more VRAM. Using nEVEn's default 35% level provides optimal visual clarity while saving gigabytes of display memory.
  • Preserving High-Detail Feature Walls: If a specific branded wallpaper, large artwork, or architectural panel requires original 8K (8,192 px) or 4K (4,096 px) resolution, simply toggle off its card switch (turn pill OFF) in the grid before running the batch.

10. nEVEn vs. Basic Material Resizers: The Architectural Advantage

A common question architects ask is: "Why use nEVEn's Texture Optimization when basic free material resizers exist for SketchUp?"

The table below outlines the critical differences between legacy utility resizers and nEVEn's Performance Intelligence Engine:

Feature / Capability Legacy / Free Material Resizers nEVEn Texture Optimization
Asset Discovery Dumb list of all textures; requires tedious manual searching. Diagnostic Intelligence: Automatically sorts assets into PRIORITY, SECONDARY, and OBSERVED queues based on true GPU VRAM strain.
Backup & Safety Net Zero Safety: Irreversible downsampling. Once executed, original full-res files are permanently lost in the model. Autonomous Backup: Prompts "Create Backup First?" and saves an exact timestamped .skp snapshot in the project's local nEVEn/ folder.
Crash Protection Frequently freezes SketchUp when parsing massive 100MB+ textures in WebDialogs. PREVIEW REJECTED Guard: Suppresses thumbnail generation for raw textures ≥ 34 MB to eliminate out-of-memory BugSplats.
Target Sizing Control Forces users to type blind square numbers (e.g., "1024"), distorting non-square aspect ratios. Proportional Slider (5%-95%): Displays exact Est. Target Pixel Resolution (downscaling 8K/4K to clean 2K/1K) and Est. Disk Size on every card before execution.
Material Management Pure downsampling only. Complete Visual Toolset: 5-card grid, in-place texture swapping (folder icon), material deletion with safe default fallback, and native Material Sync (↻).
Material Integrity Frequently causes UV shifts or loses transparency. 100% Locked UVs: Rebinds using native world-length arrays ([width, height]), preserving exact scale, tile frequency, tint, and alpha transparency (32-bit PNGs).
Diagnostic Verification Operation ends blindly without feedback. Closed-Loop Invalidation: Live-updates the Main Advisory Box and prompts an immediate Rescan to verify true VRAM and load reduction.

Can I undo an optimization run? ›

If you selected CREATE BACKUP & PROCEED before running optimization, an exact pre-optimization copy of your .skp file is safely stored in your project's local nEVEn/ folder. You can revert to that backup at any time. In addition, the persistent View History link in the footer maintains a detailed audit trail of all optimizations performed during your session.

What happens when I click the Trash Icon on a card? ›

Clicking the trash icon deletes the material from the SketchUp database. All 3D faces in your model that were painted with that material safely fall back to SketchUp's default material. The underlying 3D geometry is never deleted or altered.

What does the PREVIEW REJECTED placeholder on a card mean? ›

This is an intentional system protection guard. When an imported raw texture is exceptionally large (≥ 34 MB on disk, such as an uncompressed 13,000 x 20,000 px image [ultra-dense 13K+]), rendering a high-resolution preview inside a dialog window can exhaust Chromium memory and cause SketchUp to BugSplat. nEVEn protects your drafting session by suppressing the thumbnail and displaying PREVIEW REJECTED. You can still safely optimize, delete, or replace the texture using the card controls.

Why is the OPTIMIZE button missing from my Results Dashboard? ›

The OPTIMIZE button is context-aware: it only appears when nEVEn detects actionable heavy textures (at least one texture ≥ 5.0 MB or with a dimension ≥ 2K [2,048 px]). If your model already operates within clean, lightweight texture limits, nEVEn hides the button to keep your dashboard focused and clutter-free.

Does nEVEn leave behind hidden temporary files or junk on my computer? ›

No. nEVEn operates with an uncompromising Zero-Junk Guarantee. To measure embedded textures with byte-level precision, temporary inspection files are exported to system memory and immediately deleted once verified. Furthermore, automated background maintenance continuously sweeps any orphaned temporary caches, and prunes session logs older than 3 days. Your primary system drive (C:) never accumulates hidden bloat or leftover files.

What happens to transparent materials like glass, water, or foliage cutouts? ›

nEVEn detects bit depth and alpha channels before processing. Textures with transparency (32-bit PNGs) are strictly preserved in .png format with their alpha transparency intact. Only opaque textures are normalized to .jpg for maximum memory savings.

Can I replace a texture with a completely different image file from my computer? ›

Yes. Click the Folder Icon on the top-left of any card. This opens a native file dialog allowing you to select a new image file from your hard drive. nEVEn swaps the new texture onto the material in-place, preserving assigned geometry without requiring you to manually repaint faces in the model.

Will optimizing textures alter the position, rotation, or scale of my materials on walls or floors? ›

No. nEVEn extracts the exact physical world mapping dimensions (width and height in inches or millimeters) from the original material before resizing. When the compressed image is rebound, it applies identical real-world dimensions. Your floor tiles, brick coursing, and wood planks will maintain their exact scale, alignment, and texture repeat frequency without stretching or shifting.
