nEVEn: Model Protection & Performance Intelligence (Quickstart & First Scan)
What is nEVEn?
nEVEn is the dedicated caretaker, protector, and performance intelligence engine for your SketchUp projects.
In professional 3D design and modeling workflows, SketchUp models continuously accumulate invisible strain: fragmented geometry, oversized textures, duplicate groups, and corrupted layers that lead to viewport lag, heavy files, and unexpected BugSplat crashes. nEVEn acts as an authoritative shield - protecting model integrity, eliminating lag, and providing local visual version history.
Everything in nEVEn begins with a comprehensive, non-destructive Model Scan.
1. Interface & Access Points
nEVEn can be accessed across three primary locations inside SketchUp:
A. Floating Toolbar (Quick Action Icons)
nIcon (Cyan Circle): Runs a comprehensive Manual Scan of your active model and automatically opens the Results Dashboard once complete.cIcon (Cyan Circle): Opens the Checkpoint window to view visual revision cards, inspect project history, and restore previous versions in 1 click.
B. Extensions Menu (Extensions > nEVEn)
For direct access or when the toolbar is hidden:
- Run Manual Scan: Initiates the full A-to-Z diagnostic scan.
- Checkpoint: Opens the main visual Checkpoint window.
- Save Checkpoint Prompt: Opens a direct prompt (
Save Checkpoint?) to immediately create a checkpoint of the current model state. - Purge + Save: Purges unused materials, layers, and component definitions, then performs a clean save.
- Purge + Save + Rescan: Purges, saves, and immediately runs a fresh scan to display an updated health score.
- Settings: Opens engine preferences, background timers, auto-save intervals, and supervision settings.
C. Context Menu (Right-Click on Geometry)
Right-clicking any selected group, component, or surface reveals dedicated nEVEn tools:
- Clean Geometry: Instantly detects and eliminates loose stray edges, merges coplanar seams, and heals unwanted internal faces.
- Fix Reversed Faces: Automatically identifies and flips inverted back-faces (blue faces) outward while strictly preserving both front and back material assignments.
2. Step 1: Running Your First Manual Scan
After opening your project in SketchUp, click the n icon on the toolbar.
nEVEn immediately launches a dedicated scanning modal (INITIALISING. MANUAL SCAN) and performs an exhaustive, A-to-Z audit across every single element inside your .skp file - leaving zero blind spots:
- Complete Geometry: Edges, curves, faces, surfaces, groups, component instances, nested assemblies, loose stray lines, coplanar seams, and inverted back-faces.
- All Textures & Materials: Every mapped material swatch, image resolutions (1K, 2K, 4K, 8K+), uncompressed VRAM weight, duplicate textures, and missing image paths.
- Structure & Organization: Tags/layers, tag folders, outliner hierarchy, scenes, active display styles, section planes, and shadow settings.
- Hidden Data & Database Bloat: Unused background component definitions, dead materials, empty tags, and legacy plugin metadata clutter.
- System Strain & Stability: Live RAM memory consumption, viewport draw load percentage, and real-time Crash Risk probability.
Upon reaching 100%, the scanning modal automatically closes and opens the Main Results Dashboard with the complete diagnostic breakdown ready for review.
3. Visual Alert States & The Results Dashboard Overview
A. The 3 Alert States (Color-Coded Model Health)
Immediately upon opening the Results Dashboard, the entire interface reflects the active health state of your model through three authoritative color codes:
- Green (Stable): The model is lightweight, well-organized, and safe. Viewport operations and navigation remain completely fluid.
- Amber (Caution): The model is accumulating moderate strain (e.g., elevated polygon density, duplicate groups, or unoptimized textures).
- Cyberpunk Red (Critical): The model is under heavy strain with elevated crash or BugSplat risk (e.g., massive oversized textures exhausting GPU memory or severe geometry defects).
(Note: Detailed texture memory thresholds, VRAM limits, and compression rules are covered in Chapter 04: OPTIMIZE).
B. The Diagnosis & Action Center
Positioned directly in the center of the control dashboard is an intelligent advisory card:
- The Reason: Plainly explains the exact underlying cause of the current health state in clear, non-technical language.
- The Action: Directly below it, the
ACTION:directive provides the user with clear, immediate advice on what to execute next to relieve model strain.
C. The Initial Glance: Session Active Banner
When the control panel first opens, the bottom telemetry graph remains collapsed by default. In its place, a prominent banner appears for the first 3-5 seconds:
SESSION ACTIVE : X MIN
This displays the exact elapsed time since your last manual save, providing users with an immediate, heads-up reminder of active unsaved work before fading to reveal detailed session controls.
D. Autonomous Crash Shield (Emergency Safety Backup)
Rather than just displaying an alert when your model enters a vulnerable state, nEVEn features an autonomous safety net called Crash Shield. During any diagnostic scan, if system strain, memory saturation, or geometry defects push your model into an elevated risk state, Crash Shield automatically captures a rolling emergency backup in the background.
Hardware-Calibrated Protection
Crash Shield continuously tunes its sensitivity to your computer's active Hardware Profile:
- Mobile Laptops & Entry Systems: Triggers earlier and with higher sensitivity to safeguard shared system memory and integrated GPUs.
- Balanced Workstations: Calibrated for standard architectural production workflows with balanced risk margins.
- Studio Rigs: Provides wider operational headroom for massive multi-building campuses and ultra-dense scenes.
What Triggers Crash Shield?
Crash Shield actively monitors multiple real-time indicators and steps in when:
- Single Monster Asset: An unoptimized 3D Warehouse download (such as a dense chandelier, high-poly plant, or complex furniture asset) disproportionately dominates scene resources.
- Texture Memory Pressure: Heavy, uncompressed textures (4K [4,096 px] or 8K [8,192 px] bitmaps) exhaust available display and render VRAM.
- Rapid Load Acceleration: A massive influx of polygons or geometry defects between consecutive scans causes an abrupt spike in stability risk.
How Crash Shield Protects Your Work:
- Zero Viewport Freezing: Executes seamlessly during scan finalization (displaying
SECURING MODEL) without freezing your mouse or interrupting active drafting. - Rolling A/B Slot Architecture: Automatically writes to the project's
nEVEn/folder using an alternating_cs_A.skpand_cs_B.skprolling system - ensuring at least one clean, uncorrupted recovery state is always preserved on disk. - Dashboard Confirmation Badge: Upon scan completion, the Results Dashboard confirms:
Backup created for safety due to elevated risk. - The BugSplat Safety Net: If SketchUp unexpectedly freezes or crashes due to a sudden BugSplat minutes after an intensive modeling operation, your latest unsaved design progress is safely preserved in the rolling Crash Shield backup.
4. Next Steps

Topic Related FAQ
Why does my SketchUp file freeze or crash when orbiting? ›
Viewport freezing and crashes are typically caused by uncompressed textures (such as oversized 4K or 8K bitmaps [4,096-8,192 px]) exhausting GPU VRAM or excessive stray vector edges. nEVEn’s First Scan pinpoints the exact culprit within seconds - whether it is a bloated texture map or an unsoftened 3D Warehouse mesh - and provides direct 1-click resolution actions.
What should I do if nEVEn flags my model as "Critical" (Red)? ›
Check the central Diagnosis & Action Center card on the dashboard. If the reason is texture memory, click [OPTIMIZE] to downscale bloated images. If the reason is geometry strain, click [RESCAN] to run automated Edge Cleanup and Absolute Purge.
Does running a diagnostic scan in nEVEn modify my 3D geometry? ›
No. Diagnostic scans in nEVEn are 100% read-only and non-destructive. The core engine analyzes polygon density, materials, and internal dictionaries in background memory without touching or altering your model entities.
How do I check if my SketchUp model is healthy and well-optimized? ›
Install nEVEn and click the nEVEn Scan (n) icon in your toolbar (or navigate to Extensions > nEVEn > Run Manual Scan). nEVEn performs a non-destructive 1-click forensic scan, delivering authoritative Load and Health Scores (0-100%) that instantly flag oversized textures, polygon strain, duplicate groups, and BugSplat crash risk.
How does nEVEn remind architects to save work during long sessions? ›
Whenever you open the Results Dashboard, the prominent SESSION ACTIVE : X MIN banner displays the exact elapsed time since your last save. If your model enters a Critical state, an automated 5-minute reminder dialog prompts you to save before risking data loss.
